About Rara Lake Trek

The Rara Lake Trek is an 8-day journey to Rara Lake, Nepal’s largest lake, set at 2,990m inside Rara National Park in the Mugu and Jumla districts of Karnali Province. Unlike a straightforward there-and-back trek, this itinerary is built around a slower, more immersive route through the Karnali region: yoga sessions, an organic agro-tourism farm stay, a stretch of Karnali River rafting, horse riding, and cultural exchange with local women’s groups, alongside the trekking itself.

The journey starts overland from Kathmandu by tourist bus to Surkhet, then continues by jeep into the Karnali hills to the Center for Agro-Tourism at Piluchaur, a working organic farm along the Karnali River. A full day here combines morning yoga, an eco-farm visit, a 15km rafting stretch on the Karnali, and a discussion session with local women entrepreneurs, closing with a cultural performance in the evening.

From the agro-farm, the route to Rara Lake itself is genuinely mixed-mode: part jeep, part horse riding, part trekking, climbing steadily out of the Karnali valley and into the pine and juniper forest that rings the lake. Rara Lake, also known locally as Mahendra Tal, is the largest freshwater lake in Nepal and a Ramsar-listed wetland, ringed by the peaks of Chuchemara, Ruma Kand, and Malika Kand. A full day at the lake is left free for yoga and exploring its shoreline, considered by many to be one of the most tranquil spots in the Nepal Himalaya.

The return route treks and jeeps south into Bajura district, ending at Kolti’s Olive Eco Village, where the itinerary builds in a second cultural day: a walk through Kolti’s old village, another yoga session, organic local food, an eco-farm visit, and a further discussion meeting with women’s groups in the area. The trip closes with a short flight from Kolti to Nepalgunj and on to Kathmandu, arriving back the same day.

This is a trip for travelers who want Rara Lake’s remoteness and scenery without a purely mountain-focused itinerary — closer to a wellness and cultural immersion trip through Nepal’s far-western hills, with the lake itself as the centerpiece.

An early departure by tourist bus from Kathmandu, heading west through Nepal’s mid-hills toward Surkhet, the administrative capital of Karnali Province. A long but scenic overland day. Overnight at hotel in Surkhet.

Day 2:Drive from Surkhet to the Center for Agro-Tourism, Piluchaur (9–10 hours)

A long jeep drive from Surkhet into the Karnali hills, following the river toward Piluchaur, home to a working organic agro-tourism farm. The road is rugged in places, with the landscape opening into forested hills and river valleys as you approach. Overnight at the agro-farm.

Day 3: Rest and 15km Karnali rafting

A full day based at the agro-farm. Start with a 2-hour yoga class followed by an organic breakfast grown on the farm, then join a guided eco-farm visit. Midday, head out for a 15km rafting stretch on the Karnali River. Back at the farm, enjoy lunch and a discussion meeting with local women entrepreneurs about their businesses and cooperatives, before a local cultural performance and dinner in the evening. Overnight at the agro-farm.

Day 4:Jeep, horse riding, and trek to Rara

A genuinely mixed-mode travel day: roughly 3 hours by jeep, followed by 3 hours on horseback, and a further 5 hours of trekking as the route climbs out of the Karnali valley into the forested hills surrounding Rara Lake. A 1-hour yoga class is built into the day to help unwind after the long journey. Overnight near Rara Lake.

Day 5:Full day at Rara Lake

A full free day to explore Rara National Park at your own pace. Start with a morning yoga class, then spend the day walking the lakeshore, taking in views toward Chuchemara Hill and the surrounding pine and juniper forest, and visiting the Thakur Baba temple on the lake’s southeastern corner. Overnight near Rara Lake.

Day 6:Trek and jeep from Rara to Kolti (approx. 8 hours combined)

Depart Rara on foot, trekking roughly 5 hours through forest and hill terrain before connecting with a jeep for the final 3-hour stretch into Kolti, Bajura district’s apple-growing hub. Overnight at the Olive Eco Village, Kolti.

Day 7:Old village visit and cultural day in Kolti

A gentler day based in Kolti. A 2-hour walk into the old village area, followed by a yoga class, a visit to a local eco-farm, and organic local food. The afternoon includes a discussion meeting with women’s groups in Kolti, continuing the trip’s focus on connecting with local entrepreneurs across the Karnali region. Overnight at the Olive Eco Village, Kolti.

Day 8:Fly from Kolti to Nepalgunj to Kathmandu

An early flight from Kolti to Nepalgunj (approx. 40 minutes), connecting onward to Kathmandu the same day. Arrive back in the capital in time for an evening at leisure.

Rara Lake Trek Cost

The Rara Lake Trek is priced on request, since jeep, horse, rafting, and yoga logistics in the Karnali region vary by group size and season more than on standard teahouse treks. Contact us via WhatsApp or the enquiry form for a tailored quote.

Group Size: Sharing jeep hire, rafting guides, and yoga instruction across a larger group brings the per-person price down. Solo travelers and small groups pay a higher rate due to less cost-sharing on the overland legs.

Trekking Duration: The standard itinerary is 8 days from Kathmandu. It can be extended with additional days at Rara Lake or shortened by flying directly into Talcha Airport near Rara instead of the full overland route, on request.

Transportation: The Kathmandu–Surkhet tourist bus, jeep transfers within the Karnali region, horse riding on the Piluchaur–Rara stretch, and the Kolti–Nepalgunj–Kathmandu return flights are included as part of the package.

Yoga & Cultural Programme: A dedicated yoga instructor and local facilitators for the women’s group meetings and cultural performances are included throughout the trip, not just at Rara Lake.

Trekking Season: Spring and autumn offer the clearest weather for both the rafting stretch and the Rara Lake sections. Monsoon rafting conditions and winter snow at Rara affect scheduling — ask us about season-specific adjustments to the itinerary.

Best Time of Year for the Rara Lake Trek

Planning your Rara Lake Trek? Since the itinerary combines rafting, horse riding, and lake-based trekking, season affects more parts of this trip than a standard mountain trek.

Autumn (September–November) — Best Overall

  • Stable, dry weather across the Karnali region
  • Clear views of Chuchemara Hill and the ranges around Rara Lake
  • Good rafting water levels on the Karnali following the monsoon
  • Comfortable temperatures for the Piluchaur–Rara trekking and horse-riding stretch

Spring (March–May) — Also Good

  • Warmer temperatures at lower elevations around Surkhet and Piluchaur
  • Rhododendron blooms on the forested approach to Rara
  • Generally clear mornings with a chance of afternoon cloud

Monsoon (June–August) — Not Recommended

  • Higher water levels change rafting conditions significantly (better suited to experienced rafters, not general itineraries)
  • Landslide risk on the Surkhet–Piluchaur jeep road
  • Cloudy skies limit lake and mountain views at Rara

Winter (December–February) — Limited Access

  • Rara Lake can freeze from December to March, changing the shoreline experience but adding a striking, quiet off-season atmosphere
  • Cold temperatures and possible snow affect horse riding and jeep access on the Piluchaur–Rara stretch
  • Rafting on the Karnali is not offered during this period

FAQs of Rara Lake Trek

How much does the Rara Lake Trek cost?

Cost depends on group size, season, and the specific mix of jeep, horse, and rafting logistics arranged for your group, so we quote it on request. Contact us via WhatsApp or the enquiry form for a tailored price.

How difficult is the Rara Lake Trek?

It’s rated easy to moderate. The maximum altitude (2,990m at Rara Lake) is much lower than most Himalayan treks, so altitude sickness risk is minimal, but Day 4’s combined jeep, horse-riding, and trekking leg is a long day and calls for reasonable fitness and comfort on horseback.

When is the best time for the Rara Lake Trek?

Autumn (September–November) offers the most stable weather for both the rafting stretch and the lake itself. Spring (March–May) is also good. Monsoon changes rafting conditions significantly, and Rara Lake can freeze between December and March.

Do I need trekking experience for this trip?

Not extensive experience — the trekking sections are moderate, and the itinerary is built around yoga, cultural visits, and rafting as much as walking. Basic fitness and comfort with horse riding on Day 4 are the main things to prepare for.

What permits do I need for the Rara Lake Trek?

A Rara National Park entry permit is required and included in the package. No restricted-area permit is needed for this route.

How do I get to Rara Lake on this itinerary?

The route runs overland from Kathmandu by tourist bus to Surkhet, then by jeep to the Piluchaur agro-tourism farm, followed by a mixed jeep, horse-riding, and trekking day to reach Rara Lake itself. The return leg treks and jeeps south to Kolti, connecting to a flight back to Kathmandu via Nepalgunj.

What is the Center for Agro-Tourism at Piluchaur?

It’s a working organic farm along the Karnali River near Surkhet, used as a base for yoga, eco-farm visits, and meetings with local women entrepreneurs, as well as the starting point for the Karnali rafting stretch on Day 3.

Is rafting included, and how difficult is it?

Yes, a 15km stretch of the Karnali River is included on Day 3, run with a qualified rafting guide and safety equipment. It’s set up as a scenic, moderate stretch suitable for travelers without prior rafting experience — different from the more technical whitewater sections found further upstream on the Karnali.

What is the yoga programme like?

Yoga sessions are built into most days of the trip, led by a qualified instructor, ranging from a 2-hour morning session at the agro-farm to shorter sessions at Rara and Kolti. No prior yoga experience is required.

Where do I sleep on the Rara Lake Trek?

You’ll stay in a hotel in Surkhet, a farm homestay at Piluchaur, a lodge or homestay near Rara Lake, and at the Olive Eco Village in Kolti. Accommodation throughout is comfortable but simple, reflecting the region’s remoteness.

What makes this itinerary different from a standard Rara Lake trek?

Most Rara Lake itineraries fly directly into Talcha Airport and focus purely on the lake. This route builds in an overland journey through the Karnali region, Karnali rafting, horse riding, daily yoga, and structured cultural exchange with women’s groups in two different communities.

Can this trip be combined with the Badimalika Trek?

Yes. Both itineraries pass through Kolti’s Olive Eco Village and can be combined into a longer far-western Nepal trip covering Rara Lake and Badimalika Temple in a single journey — ask us about a combined itinerary.

What should I pack for the Rara Lake Trek?

Beyond standard trekking gear, pack for rafting (quick-dry clothing, water shoes, a dry bag) and yoga (comfortable, breathable clothing). See the full packing list above.

Is the Badimalika Trek safe during the Janai Purnima festival?

Yes, though it’s the busiest time of year. Expect more crowded jeep roads and camping areas around the festival dates. Guides plan logistics around the pilgrimage crowds to keep the experience smooth.

Is the Rara Lake Trek suitable for families or older travelers?

The lower altitude and moderate trekking distances make it more accessible than high-altitude treks, but the long overland travel days and horse riding on Day 4 are worth discussing with us in advance for families with young children or travelers with mobility concerns.
