What Is Rauchuli?

Rauchuli is a high pasture and viewpoint at roughly 3,785m in Nuwakot district, a full day’s walk beyond Sagar Kunda on the trail toward Gosaikunda. Rauchuli is best known for its wide, open sunrise and sunset views across a long ridge of Himalayan peaks running east to west, and it gives the entire trek its name. From Rauchuli, the trail climbs another day to Jyakumchuli Peak, the highest point on the route.

Because Rauchuli sits well off Nepal’s standard trekking circuits, in an area with no teahouses, it is normally visited only as part of a guided camping itinerary rather than as a standalone day hike. Nepal Adventure Trail’s Rauchuli Gosaikunda Trek is built around reaching Rauchuli, Jyakumchuli Peak, and Gosaikunda Lake in a single 9-day trip.

About the Rauchuli Gosaikunda Trek

The Rauchuli Gosaikunda Trek is one of Nepal’s newest and least-crowded trekking trails, tracing a remote path through Nuwakot district to reach the sacred Gosaikunda Lake (4,380m) from a direction almost no trekkers use. Instead of following the busy Langtang Valley approach through Syabrubesi, this route climbs out of the Kathmandu Valley through Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park and into the hill villages of Nuwakot, joining Langtang National Park only in its final stages.

Along the way, the trail strings together a remarkable chain of high-altitude lakes, including Lamu Kunda, Nau Kunda, Ekle Kunda, Sagar Kunda, Raja Rani Kunda, Saraswati Kunda, and Bhairav Kunda, before arriving at Gosaikunda itself. Local communities in the region consider this a pilgrim’s route in its own right, and the lakes are visited by devotees well before most trekkers ever hear of them.

The trek’s high point is Jyakumchuli Peak, also known locally as Chyarkung Chuli, which at roughly 4,600m is the highest point in Nuwakot district. From its summit ridge, a 360-degree panorama opens up across Dorje Lakpa, Jugal Himal, Langtang Lirung, Gangchhenpo, Ganesh Himal, and on a clear day, Shishapangma across the border in Tibet, alongside a distant view toward Everest.

Because the trail passes through areas with no lodges for the first several days, this trek runs on a camping basis between Baghmara and Gosaikunda, with a support crew handling tents, kitchen, and gear. From Gosaikunda onward, the route rejoins the established Langtang Valley trail network, and you switch to guest houses at Gosaikunda and Sing Gompa (Chandanbari) for the final two nights.

This is a trip built for trekkers who have already done Nepal’s classic routes and want something genuinely new: fewer people on the trail, unexplored villages, and a summit and a sacred lake that most itineraries never combine.

Rauchuli Gosaikunda Trek Itinerary (9 Days)

Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu

In the evening, join a pre-trek briefing covering the route, camping arrangements, and gear check, followed by a welcome dinner featuring Nepali cuisine. Overnight at hotel in Kathmandu. Meal: Dinner.

Day 2:Drive from Kathmandu to Baghmara via Dhupcheshwor Mahadev (2,200m, 5-6 hrs)

Leaving Kathmandu, the drive follows the Tokha road onto the Pasang Lhamu Highway, passing through Bidur, the district headquarters of Nuwakot, before turning onto rural roads toward Dhupcheshwor Mahadev. This centuries-old Shiva temple, whose name derives from “dhup” (incense) and “ishwor” (lord), is a working pilgrimage site for locals seeking blessings for health and prosperity. From here, the drive continues to Baghmara, the trailhead village where the trek begins. Overnight in camping tent. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Day 3:Trek from Baghmara to Sagar Kunda / Holi Kunda (3,300m, 6-7 hrs)

The trail climbs out of Baghmara into the edge of Langtang National Park, passing through forest and hill terrain typical of Nuwakot’s middle hills. Sagar Kunda, also called Holi Kunda, is a small sacred lake ringed with prayer flags where pilgrims gather during the full moon for ritual bathing. The setting is quiet, remote, and largely unknown outside the local community. Overnight in camping tent. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Day 4: Trek from Sagar Kunda to Rauchuli (3,785m, 4-5 hrs)

The trail continues through forest and past scattered high-altitude settlements, gaining elevation steadily toward Rauchuli, the pasture and viewpoint that gives the trek its name. Views open up progressively across the Langtang range, Ganesh Himal, Manaslu, and the Annapurna range as the trail climbs above the treeline. Camp is set up at Rauchuli, with sunrise and sunset views across the surrounding ridgelines. Overnight in camping tent. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Day 5:Trek from Rauchuli to Jyakumchuli Peak, descend to Chheda Kharka (4,600m, 6-7 hrs)

This is the most demanding day of the trek. From Rauchuli, the trail climbs past Khukuri Dhar, a steep rocky ridge, before a final ascent to the summit ridge of Jyakumchuli Peak (Chyarkung Chuli) at roughly 4,600m, the highest point in Nuwakot district. From here, a genuine 360-degree panorama spans Dorje Lakpa, Jugal Himal, the Langtang range, Ganesh Himal, Manaslu, the Annapurna range, and peaks across the Tibetan border, with Shishapangma visible on a clear day. After time at the summit, the trail descends to camp at Chheda Kharka. Overnight in camping tent. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Day 6:Trek from Chheda to Gosaikunda (4,380m, 3-4 hrs)

A shorter but scenic day, passing several of the region’s smaller sacred lakes, including Raja Rani Kunda, Saraswati Kunda, and Bhairav Kunda, before reaching Gosaikunda itself. According to Hindu mythology, Gosaikunda was formed when Lord Shiva struck the mountainside to create a cooling pool after consuming poison during the churning of the ocean. The lake is held sacred by both Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims and draws large crowds during the Janai Purnima festival each August. Guest house accommodation is available here, marking the return to Nepal’s established teahouse network. Overnight in guest house. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Day 7:Trek from Gosaikunda to Sing Gompa / Chandanbari (3,250m, 5-6 hrs)

The trail descends from Gosaikunda via Laurebina and Cholangpati, dropping back into rhododendron and pine forest. Sing Gompa is known for its monastery and its yak cheese factory, one of the oldest in the region, which has been producing cheese from local yak and chauri milk for decades and remains an important source of income for the village. Overnight in guest house. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Day 8:Trek to Dhunche, drive to Kathmandu (1,300m, 7-8 hrs)

A descending trek from Sing Gompa to Dhunche Bazaar is followed by a drive back to Kathmandu via Trishuli Bazaar. In the evening, join a farewell dinner to celebrate the completion of the Rauchuli Gosaikunda Trek. Overnight at hotel in Kathmandu. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Day 9: Departure from Kathmandu

Transfer to Tribhuvan International Airport for your onward flight, or extend your stay in Nepal. Meal: Breakfast.

Rauchuli Gosaikunda Trek Cost

The Rauchuli Gosaikunda Trek is a custom camping itinerary, and pricing depends on group size, camping crew requirements, and season. Contact us on WhatsApp or by email for a tailored quote and current departure dates.

Best Season for the Rauchuli Gosaikunda Trek

Autumn (September-November) and spring (March-May) are the best times for this trek, offering stable weather and clear mountain views from Jyakumchuli Peak and Gosaikunda. Spring brings blooming rhododendron forests along the lower trail sections, while autumn offers the clearest visibility following the monsoon. Winter trekking is possible on the lower stages but the high camp near Jyakumchuli Peak becomes cold and exposed. The monsoon months (June-August) are not recommended, as the unmarked, off-trail sections of the route become slippery and difficult to navigate.

Packing List for the Rauchuli Gosaikunda Trek

Because this route includes several nights of camping above 3,000m, pack for genuine cold-weather trekking as well as basic camp life.

  • Four-season sleeping bag (available for rent)
  • Warm down jacket and windproof outer shell
  • Trekking poles
  • Headlamp with spare batteries
  • Warm hat, gloves, and neck gaiter or buff
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, and lip balm with SPF

  • Thermal base layers and warm trekking socks
  • Water bottle and water purification tablets
  • Small first-aid kit and personal medication
  • Trekking pants and comfortable evening wear for camp
  • Dry bags for electronics, passport, and valuables

Rauchuli Gosaikunda Trek Difficulty

This trek is rated moderate to challenging. Unlike the standard Gosaikunda or Langtang Valley routes, several days run on undeveloped trail with no teahouses, camping gear, and a steep, high-altitude push to Jyakumchuli Peak (4,600m) on Day 5. Good fitness, prior hiking experience, and comfort with basic camping conditions are recommended. No technical climbing skills are required.

Rauchuli Gosaikunda Trek FAQs

What is the Rauchuli Gosaikunda Trek?

It is a 9-day trekking route through Nuwakot district that reaches Gosaikunda Lake (4,380m) via a remote, less-travelled trail, summiting Jyakumchuli Peak (4,600m) along the way. It differs from the standard Gosaikunda trek, which approaches from Syabrubesi in the Langtang Valley.

How difficult is the Rauchuli Gosaikunda Trek?

It is moderate to challenging. The route includes several camping days on undeveloped trail and a steep ascent to Jyakumchuli Peak at 4,600m, so it suits trekkers with some prior hiking experience and a reasonable level of fitness.

When is the best time to do this trek?

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) offer the most stable weather and clearest mountain views. Monsoon season is best avoided due to slippery, unmarked trail sections.

Is camping equipment provided?

Yes. Nepal Adventure Trail provides tents, camping and kitchen equipment, and a full support crew for the sections of the trek without teahouses, from Baghmara through to Gosaikunda.

What permits are needed for this trek?

You will need a Langtang National Park entry permit and a TIMS card. Both are arranged by our team before departure.

Do I need prior trekking experience?

Prior high-altitude trekking experience is helpful but not mandatory. Trekkers should prepare with regular hiking or cardio training in the months before the trip, given the camping days and the ascent to Jyakumchuli Peak.

What makes this trek different from the standard Gosaikunda Trek?

The standard Gosaikunda trek starts from Syabrubesi and follows the well-established Langtang Valley trail. The Rauchuli Gosaikunda Trek instead approaches from Nuwakot district, passing a chain of lesser-known sacred lakes and summiting Jyakumchuli Peak before joining the main Gosaikunda trail only in its final two days.

Are there altitude sickness risks?

Yes, the trek crosses 4,000m multiple times, including the 4,600m summit of Jyakumchuli Peak. Guides monitor for symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness, and the itinerary is paced to allow gradual acclimatization.

How do I book the Rauchuli Gosaikunda Trek?

Contact us on WhatsApp or by email with your preferred dates and group size, and our team will confirm availability and arrange a custom camping itinerary.
